Domains and Dictionaries

These are two activities we created for the Australian Association of English Teachers (AATE) annual conference. The first is getting students to think about the way they use different language in different domains, the second is a task to get students using, and thinking about, dictionaries. History Detective

In this activity students have to decide whether words that look or sound the same do so because they’re related or because of a quirk of history. Once they’ve guessed for themselves they have to become history detectives and do some research to see if they guessed correctly. You can download the PDF here.
